Walmart Expect Walmart to go all out this year in key categories like toys and electronics. There will be "100 toys for $10," including in-demand items like Barbie dolls and action figures. Great deals on computers including a HP Pavilion desktop for $398 (originally $498) and laptop for $448 (originally $528). Doorbusters and deals on LCD and plasma TVs (for example, a Samsung 40-in.1080p LCD, on sale for $798 from $898) will start on Black Friday but last throughout the season.
Best Buy Best Buy doesn't have Circuit City to compete with anymore, but it now faces increased competition from Walmart and clubs stores like Costco and Sam's. Early doorbusters and deals haven't been released yet, but expect very competitive pricing on hot items like Blu-ray players, GPS systems, digital cameras, HDTV and video games. Prices are also dropping on gaming consoles, including the dominant Nintendo Wii, which is being reduced to a rumored $199.99 from $248.
Old Navy & Gap Expect to see discounts on sweaters, loungewear and denim. If that sounds stale, it's because apparel retailers have been pushing the same items each year with little variation. Nostalgia-themed designs and basics are still the staples. Based on last year's experience, both retailers will likely promote up to 30% off for early shoppers, open doors at 5 a.m., and offer increased savings when you buy multiple garments.

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. -- Joaquin Phoenix appears to be getting in the act of being a petulant hip-hop star. Early Thursday morning he jumped off the stage during a short performance at a Miami Beach nightclub and confronted an audience member. Security guards dragged Phoenix back on stage and escorted him away. It's unclear whether the confrontation -- and his pledge to quit acting and start rapping -- was real or a put-on. Actor Casey Affleck recorded the performance on camera. In October, Phoenix's publicist confirmed he was making the career switch. In January he performed at a Las Vegas nightclub and the next month he made a strange appearance on David Letterman's "Late Show." Actor Ben Stiller lampooned that appearance at the Oscars.
